Best Fridge Freezer: Chest Or Upright?

First off, it must be emphasized that there is a significant difference between a refrigerator and a freezer, said differentiation of which must be made in choosing the best fridge freezer. While a refrigerator maintains an overall temperature of a few degrees above water’s freezing point, a freezer works by maintaining a temperature below water’s freezing point.

Fundamentally speaking there are two basic types of freezers on the open market – the chest and upright styles.  Both of these freezers can handle the basics of food storage. A freezer chest is designed to provide a bit more space for meats, fruits and vegetables that need to be maintained at temperatures of 32 degrees F or less. Even with the best fridge freezer appliances the space for frozen foodstuff is limited which is why a main freezer is such a handy kitchen convenience.

Which is the best among the two types?  Keep in mind that each one has its pros and cons as well as that you have to choose based on many factors including price, features, capacity, energy efficiency and even installation.

Freezer Type

Freezer upright models will have price tags that are higher than chest style models. The price of an upright freezer will also be based on the unique features, brand name, and size of the unit. As you add more options to the model the cost will be higher.

For example, if you want to have an automatic defrost feature, you may have to pay as much as $100 more on a unit.  Ask the dealer about it as such a feature is not easily evident on the specifications provided.

Even with the higher cost an upright freezer remains a favorite in many countries. This style of freezer allows you to easily organize foodstuffs with those handy, adjustable baskets, shelves and pull-out bins. The versatility and convenience of a freezer upright model helps ensure that you and your family rotate frozen food items regularly.

For another thing, you can install an upright freezer in the same way as a refrigerator.  Its footprint is definitely smaller than that of the chest freezer.

Freezer Type

The freezer chest type is widely considered to be the most economical for two reasons.  First, every single inch of space can be used since stacking up is the main method of storage. Second, energy efficiency is the best among the two types because of its built-in sidewall insulation, which allows for keeping of food for up to 3 days even when the unit is unplugged. Plus, there is also the fact that chest freezers are more durable their upright counterparts given the same level of proper maintenance.

There are some special features of the freezer chest that many have widely considered to be very economical. The structural design allows users to vertically stack frozen items and it is thereby possible to use up every inch of interior room in the unit. The side insulation design is thicker and this means that in the case of a loss of power your food can remain frozen for as long as 72 hours. These styles of freezers are also known for providing long years of reliable service and are constructed to be very durable.

A chest freezer does have its share of disadvantages which include a substantial carbon footprint and its cumbersome dimensions which makes it difficult to get in and out of doorways. Always plan where these styles of freezers will be placed because they are so hard to move. You should choose a site where you will have sufficient head and floor clearance when opening and using the freezer.

Perhaps the main disadvantages noted with the purchase of a chest freezer are related to energy consumption and overall size. It has a rather large carbon footprint and these appliances are notoriously difficult to fit through hallways and doorways. You must always plan where you are going to place the unit ahead of time since it will remain there most of its life. Making sure the area has sufficient space that allows you to raise the lid properly may also present a hurdle.

Converting A House Into A Home

While often seen as synonymous, there is a subtle difference between houses and homes. Perhaps this difference is not so subtle to the people who live in these places, though. A house is just a space to live in, while a home is a space that people look forward to seeing at the end of the day. While many factors go into making a house a home, home decoration can help create a homey living space where you want to be.

Home decor accents are crucial to making a house a home. Paintings are one element that can be added to a room that can make it more comfortable and give it a personal feeling. When choosing a painting, try to avoid just picking out a painting that catches your eye. Instead, choose one that you can see yourself looking at every day. Try to get a painting that has the feel that you are going for in your home. For example, if you want your home to have a warm feel, choose a painting that utilizes warm colors like reds and oranges.

Other accents include lovely vases, well-made furniture, and high-quality faux flowers. For a comfortable feel, choose only quality products that you enjoy being surrounded by. To both save money and give your home a relaxed energy, choose only a few of these accents. A ’splash’ of decoration versus a wave of ’stuff’ can really make a difference in your home.

A color scheme is very important to have in mind when you are picking out furniture and other home decorations. The color scheme should consist of several colors that go together, and a room should have only these colors as focal points. Different rooms can have different color schemes, or, if you prefer, you can use the same color scheme throughout your home.

These same rules apply to children’s rooms. One additional thing, though, is that you should decorate a child’s room so that it can be appropriate for years. One solution is to opt out of pastel pinks and blues in favor of bolder colors that the children may like when they are older. Convertible baby furniture can also keep the space appropriate, as cribs can convert into toddler beds.

It is also a good idea to get a bedding collection that matches a room’s decorations. Try to get bed covers that match the rest of the room, as bedding is often the focal point of a room.

With these tips in mind, you can easily change your house into a home. If you are still unsure about the steps you want to take you can ask an expert from your local home decorating store for advice.
