Sanding your hardwood floor is the first thing you need to do. Sweeping the floor before sanding will remove dirt and debris. Check the surface for any nails and tacks and remove them. Utilizing a 20-grit sandpaper, start sanding around the corner of the room.

Staining is an option that you need to think about. If you think your floor does not need staining then you can go ahead to the finishing stage. But if you choose to stain it, brush the floor using a vacuum or a broom. After removing debris and dust you can go ahead and apply stain using a brush. The drying of the stain will take about five minutes or longer. If you think the floor needs a second coat you may apply another one using your brush.

And lastly, apply 3 to 4 coats of polyurethane. Whether you stain or not, you must seal the entire floor with a wool cover or a thick nap roller. Apply one coat of polyurethane at a time and let it dry for about 3 to 6 hours before applying another coat. Although it is also dependent upon the brand of polyurethane that you will use. Therefore you need to check what kind of polyurethane you are using to determine the drying time.
